The Samoa Times was Samoa's main newspaper in the 1980s and early 1990s. It was a daily bulletin and became very popular for over a decade in Samoa and the South Pacific region, however it went out of business after a short while. Samoa Times was a huge success and provided a wealth of information and great value and service to both the reading public, government ministries, civil societies and local businesses. With every business venture, it also presents great challenges and obstacles. At a time when migration to New Zealand was quite attractive, that was one of the major reasons why the newsprint came to an end. Our people felt the pulling factors of better social and economic opportunities stronger and New Zealand needed our people to work in the growing manufacturing industries there. Hence, local business such as newspapers were left behind and it was at the same time, that the second most active newspaper Samoa Observer emerge to fulfill the void left by the Samoa Times. |
