Abstract:
Acid rain is a complex, worldwide enviromnental problem. This study guide is intended to aid teachers of grades 4-12 to help their-students understand what acid rain is, why it is a problem, and what possible solutions exist. The document contains specific sections on: (1) the various terms used in conjunction with acid rain (such as acid deposition, wet deposition, and dry deposition); (2) how acid in rain is measured and what is defined to be acid rain by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources; (3) the source of acid rain; (4) why many people are concerned about acid rain (including discussions of acidic damage to lakes, forests, buildings, and human health); and (5) some possible solutions to the pioblem. Five learning activities are outlined. Each activity includes a grade level reference, a goal statement, a list of materials needed, background information, a suggested procedure for the activity, possible discussion questions, and ideas for extending the activity. A glossary of terms is included, along with a list of resources such as books, curriculum materials, audiovisual materials, and agencies and organizations in Wisconsin, the United States, and Canada that are involved in educating the people about acid rain.
